After completing an Arts degree from Christchurch Polytechnic, award winning artist Tony Cribb has been working from his Christchurch studio ever since. His works can best be described as quirky, with a dark sense of humour. With a passion for illustration, Tony develops characters which frequently appear in his work. Finely detailed and intricate, they form a stark contrast to the overall effect of his works which, along with the often-provocative subject matter, appear raw and edgy.
SHAUN BURDON – EXHIBITION OPENING AT MOUNTAINEER – 6TH – 20TH MAY, 5:30-7PM
•April 17, 2010 • Leave a CommentShaun Burdon requires little introduction, his name is celebrated in artistic corners throughout New Zealand, as an Artist, Art Teacher, and educator. The work in this exhibition continues Shaun’s exploration of the human figure as a medium for expressing universal aspects of the human condition. “Starting from a collection of shop mannequins and things found round the countryside, I have assembled them in various ways, combining my fascination with the antique, the primitive, drawing and applying paint.”
Haast Eagle Sculpture
•March 16, 2010 • Leave a CommentArtist Dan Kelly, has a life sized Haast Eagle sculpture in Artbay’s Mountaineer Gallery, we welcome you to come and visit it.
The artist said;
I’ve wanted to make a Haast Eagle for a very long time. I was helping remove some old steel standards, from a station below The Remarkables on a DOC expedition last year, and found myself looking at a massive pile of rusted, but sturdy steel, with a vision.
For moments on this expedition, I found myself intrigued by the fact that just over 600 years ago, Haast eagles would’ve been flying around that very mountain Range.
I could create a Haast eagle sculpture out of 100 year old steel standards (known as warratahs), so I started on this mission, which resulted in a life size replica.
The sculpture depicts the bird in flight mode, as it is about to take off.
